Freda Bertha Kelting, was born April 27, 1910, in Hilton Township, Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Chris and Bertha (Cashman) Kelting. She attended rural school through 8th grade and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1928. Freda attended Iowa State Teachers College, receiving a 2 year teaching certificate in 1938 and a B. A. in 1951. She received her masters degree in Special Education in 1955 from Illinois State University. During her teaching career she taught 7 years in rural schools of Iowa County, at Iowa Township #9 and #1 and York Township #2; 1 year at Scott County at Linn Grove #2; 10 years at Malcom, Laurel, DeWitt and Marshalltown. It was in Marshalltown that she began teaching special education classes, moving to Cedar Rapids in 1953 where she continued to help build the special education program for 19 years. She retired in 1972 after teaching for 39 years. Freda was a member of several professional education organizations, a member of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Society for Educators and of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids and the Ruth Circle of United Methodist Women. Freda enjoyed reading. Many summers were spent traveling on the way to or from college classes or professional conventions. She also visited Europe, Scandinavia and the Holy Land as well as two trips to Alaska in 1962 and 1997. Freda died Tuesday, May 29, 2007 after a brief illness, at the age of 97 years. She is survived by a sister Mildred Jones of Williamsburg; six nieces: Karen (Kenneth) Grimm, of Apache Junction, AZ, Lanette (Lyle) Crow, Oxford, Doris Ann (Chris) Rembold, Louisburg, KS, Arlene (Marlen) Junck of Oregon, WI, Evelyn (Glenn) Beavers of Ames, Shirley (Charles) Coulson of Anchorage, AK; two nephews: Darlo (Diana) Kelting of Grinnell and Dwight (Peg) Gildemeister of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Viola Gildemeister, a brother Harold Kelting; and two nephews Garth and Arlen Kelting. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am on Friday, June 1, 2007, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Pastor James Parks will officiate. Burial will be in the Pilot Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Memorials are for Camp Courageous and the St. Paul United Methodist Building Fund.
