Fred Klopfenstein

July 31, 1926 — April 29, 2013

Former Mt. Pleasant and Iowa City resident, Fred J. Klopfenstein, 86, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013 in Loveland, CO. Visitation will be held from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6th at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel with Mr. Gerry Klopfenstein officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Point Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Pathways Hospice of Fort Collins or the Pleasant Point Cemetery. Frederick J. Klopfenstein was born July 31, 1926, in Henry County, IA, the son of R. Glenn and Bessie Roth Klopfenstein. In 1944, he graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. In 1945, he served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Fort Sill, OK, as an instructor in radio theory. After being discharged from the Army, he attended Iowa Wesleyan College and Iowa State University, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy. Fred married June Collins on June 18, 1949, in Mt. Pleasant, IA. After graduation from ISU, Fred taught farm management to returning veterans at Mt. Vernon, IA; following that he worked for the U. S. Department of Agriculture in Shenandoah, IA, as a soil scientist. In 1955, he was employed by the Federal Land Bank for eighteen years as manager of these associations; Guthrie Center, Muscatine and Iowa City. In 1973-1982, he served as a vice-president of First National Bank of Iowa City, and from 1982-1988, he was a real estate broker and appraiser in Iowa City before retiring to Colorado in 1988. Fred was a long-time member of the International Lions Club in Iowa and Colorado. He was honored with the Melvin Jones Fellow award in 1999, given for dedicated humanitarian services. Fred and June were members of the Parkview United Church of Christ in Aurora, CO. Together they enjoyed traveling. Survivors include his wife, June Collins Klopfenstein; two daughters, Kristine (Richard) Klopfenstein Fletcher of Loveland, CO and Jan Klopfenstein of Pleasanton, CA; three grandchildren, Blaire and Dru Johnson of San Diego, CA, and Evan Fletcher of Loveland, CO. A sister-in-law, Marilee Klopfenstein, and many nieces and nephews also survive. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Maxine Hensley and Mildred Graber; and a brother, Glenn J. Klopfenstein.
