Franklin Lewis Hochstetler

Franklin Lewis Hochstetler, 85, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2018, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, December 31, 2018, in the East Union Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 pm at the Pleasantview Chapel in Kalona with Leon Stutzman officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, December 30, 2018 from 2:00PM - 5:00 PM at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona.

Frank was born January 30, 1933, in rural Frytown, Iowa, the son of Aaron S. and Mary Ann (Schrock) Hochstetler. Frank grew up on the family farm near Frytown. He married Mary Kathryn Swartzendruber on May 3, 1955 at the East Union Mennonite Church. They lived on a farm near Frytown until moving to Kalona in November of 1969. Frank was a member of the East Union Mennonite Church. He was a Charter member of the Kalona Lions Club.
Frank was a nursing assistant at the University of Iowa Hospital for 30+ years until his retirement in June 1996.
Frank enjoyed woodworking, Bluegrass Festivals, making metal and wooden puzzles, playing cards with his grandchildren, and playing the accordion. He played his accordion at Pleasantview Home for their Saturday morning church services for 42 years.
Frank is survived by his son, James of Kalona; two daughters, Trish (Steve) Billups of South Sioux City, NE and Lori of Kalona; 3 grandchildren: Heather (Stephen) Dunn of Des Moines, WA; Eric (Cassie) Billups of Hopkins, MN; and Dustin Billups of LaCross, WI; 2 great granddaughters: Ellery Billups and Annabel Dunn; and a sister: Edna (Gene) Miller of Kalona. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mary; a daughter Kathy Jo; 2 sisters and their spouses, Ruby (Leo) Cutshall, Gladys (Alfred) Smith; and 2 brothers Carl and Sam Hochstetler.
