KALONA - J Frank Pottorff, Jr. was born July 10, 1945, in Casper, Wyoming, the son of Jay Frank and Mary (Clark) Pottorff. He graduated from Casper High School, and then served in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam War where he was awarded the Purple Heart and several other noble awards. Honorably discharged from the Marines, Frank later received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Butler University in 1987 and a Master of Science in Psychology from Purdue University in 1991. During his professional career Frank worked in senior management for various organizations. On May 29, 1999, Frank was united in marriage to the love of his life Barbara Meinel (Gingerich) at Shiloh, and made their home in the Kalona community. Frank was currently employed as a Professor and Vice President of Administration at Shiloh University. He was a loved member of the Shiloh Church, and provided a watchful eye for his spiritual family. Frank enjoyed golf, hunting, marksmanship, skiing, ultra-lite flying, and motorcycles. He also had a weakness for stuffed animals. Frank passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids at the age of 73 years.
Frank is survived by his wife Barbara of Kalona, two daughters: Desiree Marie (Brian) Christianson of Johnstown, CO, Deena Renee (Rhodes) Carter of Milliken, CO; three step-daughters: Monya Colleen Meinel of Chicago, IL, Leah Ann (Bill) Pitka of Coralville, Havilah Joy (Troy) Peters of Iowa City, step son John Arbash (Lina) Meinel of Dubai; 8 grandchildren: Tehya Marie Smith, Dakota Ward Smith, Wylie Jax Meinel, Magnus Meinel Wilson, Leif Andreas Meinel Pitka, Anthony Joseph Peters, Faith Anne Peters, Kareem Arbash Meinel; his mother Mary Elma Pottorff of Casper, WY, a sister Lynne Louise (Jody) Murray of Casper, WY, and his entertaining, faithful K9 companion Buddy. He was preceded in death by his father Jay Frank Pottorff.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on Friday, August 24, 2018, at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. Memorial Service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, August 25, 2018, at Shiloh. Pastors Craig Haworth and Chuck Rogness will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in the Shiloh Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for Shiloh University Library.
