Ferne Mary Troyer was born February 16, 1923, in rural Parnell, Iowa the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Yoder) Fisher. She attended the Oakland School in Green Township. On May 18, 1948 she was united in marriage to Cleo Troyer at the West Union Mennonite Church. They made their home in Kalona where Ferne was a homemaker, and she worked as a cook for the Mid-Prairie Community School District for 14 years. She was a member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, and the Lioness Club. Ferne loved to quilt and made each grandchild a quilt for their high school graduation. She also loved to garden and tend to her flower beds. She was best loved for her homemade applesauce, cinnamon rolls, graham cracker fluff salad, homemade pies and the cookies she always had for the grand kids. Ferne died on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 87 years. Ferne is survived by four children - Richard Troyer (Gayle) of Cummings, GA; Ronald Troyer (Maribeth) of Phoenix, AZ; Randy Troyer (Pat) of Kalona; Beverly Strother (Jon) of Mount Vernon; nine grandchildren - Brent Troyer, Brandy Keener, Ryan Troyer, Courtney Troyer, Tanner Troyer, Lucas Troyer, Samantha Troyer, Amber Rhodus, Taylor Strother; and 5 great grandchildren - Olivia, Jonah and Celia Keener, Caleb and Jordan Troyer. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Cleo; six brothers - Harold, Glen, Orlo, Leonard, Waldo, Vernon ; and six sisters - infant Velda, Leona Miller, Erma Kauffman; Lavanda Eash, Maggie Hochstetler, and Luetta Johnson. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010, at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Pastor Don Patterson will officiate. Burial will be in the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Friday, at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, Pleasantview Home, and Iowa City Hospice.
