Fannie Bender was born March 16, 1905 in Johnson County near Wellman, Iowa the daughter of Christian and Elizabeth (Guengerich) Bender. She attended Hickory Grove rural school. She has lived in the Wellman and Kalona communities all of her life. She started working as a Nurse's Aide in August of 1960 at the Pleasantview Home, and retired in November of 1985. Following her retirement she continued to volunteer at Pleasantview where she folded laundry daily. She was a member of the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church and the WMSC. She was a seamstress and she enjoyed making rugs. Fannie died on Friday, June 10, 2005 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona following a brief illness at the age of 100 years. Fannie is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; 5 sisters - Ellen Bender, Nettie Miller, Mary Swartzendruber, Lydia Miller, Barbara Hershberger; and 2 brothers - Daniel Bender and Edwin Bender.
