SIGOURNEY-Eugene J. Snakenberg, age 78, of rural Sigourney, died Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness. Eugene was born September 14, 1928, to Ira and Barbara (Strohman) Snakenberg, on the farm where he lived his entire life and attended Plank #9 (House) school located a half mile west of his home. During his childhood he helped his family with the tasks on the farm. His favorite toy and pet was the pony named Cricket. He belonged to a 4-H club and showed a prize lamb at the Keokuk County Fair at What Cheer. He later became a 4-H leader for the Plank Jr. Farmers. On October 1, 1957, he was united in marriage to Maryetta Hahn at St. Joseph Catholic Church in East Pleasant Plain, Iowa. Eugene was a member of the Sigourney Lions Club and a board member of the Keokuk County Historical Society and St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney. Following his retirement from farming he enjoyed his draft horses: Judy, Jane, Dolly and Dotty, his daily trips to the coffee shops and going to livestock auctions. Survivors include his wife of almost 50 years, Maryetta; daughter: Marnita Beal of Wilton; two sons: Larry anf wife J.K. Snakenberg of Ottumwa and Nick of Denver, Colorado; four grandchildren: Alyson Beal of Coralville, Marshall Beal of Wilton, Colton and Clay Snakenberg of Ottumwa and one great grandson: Evan Andrew Beal of Coralville. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Barbara Dorothy Wehr and brothers: Jim, John and Paul. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2007, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, 2007, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where there will be a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Camp Courageous at Monticello, the Sigourney Lions Club or the Keokuk County Historical Society. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
