Homestead-Esther E. Sandersfeld was born August 26, 1933, in Springfield, Illinois, the daughter of Otto and Lena (Blume) Beer. She attended St. John's Parochial School near Homestead and graduated from Marengo High School, then attended Concordia Teachers College at River Forest. Esther taught at a number of parochial schools, her last being at St. Peter's in Indianapolis, Indiana. After teaching Esther moved back home to help care for her parents. She worked at the Journal Tribune office and Patrons Mutual Insurance in Williamsburg. Esther was united in marriage to Vernon Sandersfeld on August 25, 1979, on the farm near Homestead. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and enjoyed reading. Esther died Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at her home after a short illness at the age of 74 years. She is survived by her husband Vernon of Homestead; two stepsons: Steve (Becky) Sandersfeld of Homestead and David Sandersfeld of Chicago; three step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren; five sisters: Helen Sandersfeld and Paula Sandersfeld both of Williamsburg, Norma Mollison and Sylvia Taulbee both of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Lois Dunnavent of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; two brothers: Herbert Beer of Cedar Rapids and Martin Beer of Iowa City. Esther was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Dorothea Beer. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30am Saturday, January 12, 2008, at St. John's Lutheran Church near Homestead. Pastor Wayne Woolery will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for Essence of Life Hospice or Marengo Memorial Hospital.
