Ernie G. Menke

Ernest Menke, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Park Place Elder Living after a brief illness. Mr. Menke's body was donated to the Deeded Body Program in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Iowa as were his wishes. A visitation with the family present will be on Friday, October 28th, from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant. A memorial mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Brian Shepley, celebrant. Memorials have been established to St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. On line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com Born July 23, 1926, in St. Paul, IA, "Ernie" was the son of Bernard "Barney" and Rose (Kempker) Menke. He received his education at the St. James Catholic Schools in St. Paul. Ernie began his working career as a carpenter for the Mt. Hamill Elevator. The elevator expanded and started selling appliances, televisions and offered TV repair services. After some time, the elevator transferred that portion of their business to Ernie and he operated his own appliance and TV repair business in Houghton for many years. Ernie was a faithful member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant and attended church nearly every time the doors were open. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Being very health conscious, Ernie was an avid walker and was often seen walking about town, during his hour and a half daily routine. Survivors include, a brother, Paul (Veronica) Menke of Raymore, MO; a sister, Bernice Rickelman of West Point, IA; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elvera Brinkschroeder and her husband, Robert; a brother, Joseph Menke in infancy; and a brother-in-law, Leonard Rickelman.
