Williamsburg-Erna Anna Maas was born August 25, 1911 near Homestead, Iowa in Iowa County, the daughter of George and Gesina (Steinke) Sandersfeld. She attended St. John's Parochial School near Homestead. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church. Erna worked at the South Amana Bakery and Homestead Sandwich Shop until the Landmark opened where she was a waitress. Erna was united in marriage to August H. Maas on April 25, 1935 at St. John's Lutheran Church by Rev. F. Wolter. Together the couple farmed on the Maas family farm until retiring and moving to Williamsburg. She enjoyed playing cards, baking, quilting and babysitting. Erna was a member of the St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Erna died Monday, September 24, 2007 at Colonial Manor in Amana due to complications of age at the age of 96 years. Erna is survived by four children: Darlene Read of Williamsburg, Marrina (Bob) Kaloupek of Grinnell, Glenn (Rose) Maas of Osage Beach, Missouri and Patricia (Clifford) Fullhart of West Chicago, Illinois; 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren; a brother: Vernon (Esther) Sandersfeld of Homestead; two sisters: Gertrude (Murlen) Vogt of Williamsburg and Ida Witte of North English and a sister-in-law: Ruth Sandersfeld of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1988, three brothers: Elmer, Martin and an infant Wayne Sandersfeld; two sisters: an infant Vera Sandersfeld and Alma Mueller; a granddaughter: Barbara Jean Weiss and two son-in-laws: LeRoy Weiss and Mac Read. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Thursday, September 27, 2007 at the St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Pastor Karl Heck will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 7:00 pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.
