Eric M. McDonald, “Moose”, age 49, of Brooklyn, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. Memorial Services will be at 7:00 p.m., Monday, March 6, 2017, at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, with Father Corey Close officiating. Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom. Family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m., Monday, March 6, 2017, at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established.
Eric is survived by two sons Rob (Melissa) McDonald, of Brooklyn and Jason (Heather) Gire, of Cedar Rapids; and four grandchildren Adelyn and Laine McDonald and Kolton and Kameron Gire; four siblings Michael (DeeDee) McDonald, of Malcom, Phyllis (Terry) Morris, of Malcom, LeeAnn (Mark Innis) McDonald, of Grinnell and Mary (Alan) Klein, of Ladora; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Mary in 2010 and Fred in 2016, two sisters JoEllen and LuAnn McDonald in infancy.
Eric Mathew McDonald was born May 14, 1967, in Marengo, the son of Fredrick and Mary Bayzn McDonald. He graduated from BGM in 1985. Eric and his cousin Lee Hilligas were the first wrestlers from BGM to qualify and place at the state wrestling tournament. He attended Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. He married Janet Daigle on September 21, 1993, and the couple later divorced. Moose was employed as a press operator at Victor and Kinze Manufacturing. He also worked at Martin Marietta Quarry, alongside his son Rob. He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing on television, and baking, especially pies. Lemon meringue pie was his favorite. Moose loved mushroom hunting, hunting and fishing, the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Cubs, and was an Iowa State fan. He could debate about anything with people. He especially loved attending and watching his nieces, nephews and his grandchildren’s sports and school events. Moose will be greatly missed by many.
