Elvin E. Myers, 82, of New London, IA, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. that evening. A funeral service will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor David Plooster and the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Pleasant Hill Cemetery and Great River Hospice. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com. Born November 15, 1932, Elvin Edgar Myers was the son of William Otho and Daisy Beatrice (Messer) Myers. He attended Greenwood Country School and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1951. On October 1, 1951, he married Anna Miller at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War Conflict. Elvin was a lifelong farmer. He was a heavy equipment operator for Bruggemeyer and Whaley. For 28 years, he was a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. He also drove a bus route for the Mt. Pleasant Community District for 22 years. For many years, he served as the sexton of Pleasant Hill Cemetery. A talented musician, Elvin could often be found playing harmonica, strumming on the banjo, and singing with the Scrubs and Troubadores. He enjoyed attending Bluegrass music festivals and camping. He loved his career as a bulldozer operator and a farmer. A favorite hobby was to fish off the Boyleston Bridge. Elvin was a former Henry County Cattlemen's Association honoree, served as a Jackson Township Trustee, and was a member of the National Rural Mail Carriers Association. His deepest passion was being with his family, friends, and his special canine companion, Ruby. Survivors include his wife, Anna, of New London, IA; four children, Bill (Cindy) Myers of New London, IA, Dick (Cheryl) Myers of Salem, IA, Howard Myers of New London, IA, and Sheryl (Mike) Dorn of Mt. Pleasant, IA; sixteen grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Norma Rourke of Arvada, CO and Lila Logan of Mt. Pleasant, IA, along with special caregiver, Pam Chapman.
