Elmer John Sieren was born on June 14, 1918 near the Clear Creek area, the son of Michael and Margaret Greiner Sieren. He was raised there and attended high school in Harper. Elmer married Bernadine Mary Beinhart on August 20, 1940 at St. Elizabeth Church in Harper. He and Bernadine retired to Keota in 1981 after 46 years of farming. Elmer was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, St. Mary's Church in Keota and the Knights of Columbus. Farming was his life. He also enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, mushroom and hickory nut hunting, playing cards and traveling. In 2004 he became a resident of Maplewood Manor until his passing on Sunday, May 25th, 2008. Elmer lived 89 years, 11 months and 11 days. He and Bernadine enjoyed 68 years together. Survivors include his wife Bernadine of Keota, IA; children: Ronald Sieren and wife Eloise of Keota, IA; Carol Ann Kaalberg and husband Gayle of West Liberty, IA; Sharon Sieren and husband Larry Galau of Apple Valley, MN; Daniel Sieren and wife Mary of Harper, IA; Cindy Johnson and husband Donald of Fenton, MO; 14 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren; sisters Corrine Leneghan of Rock Island, IL; Ann O'Rourke of North English, IA; and Theresa Peiffer of Keota, IA. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, 7 brothers Raymond, Joseph, Leo, Leonard, Joe, Paul and Carl Sieren, and a sister Sister Helen Rose Sieren. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at Holy Trinity Parish, St. Mary's Church in Keota with the Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 PM to 8 PM Tuesday with a Christian Wake Service at 7 PM. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
