Ellen Edelman was born April 15, 1915 near Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Chancy and Mary (Yoder) Hershberger. She attended rural Snake Hollow School. On December 31, 1937 she was united in marriage to Samuel Edelman at her parents home in rural Iowa City. She worked at the Kalona Egg Plant and Kalona Dry Cleaning and Laundry. In January of 1960 they moved to Hesston, Kansas, where she worked at the Turkey Plant in Hesston and at Hurst's Egg breaking plant in Newton. In September of 1967 they returned to Kalona. She was a member of the Kalona Mennonite Church. Ellen died on Friday, November 7, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City from complications of a stroke at the age of 93 years. Ellen is survived by a son Clayton Edelman and wife Christy of Bella Vista, Arkansas; 3 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and 8 step great grandchildren; and a brother Walter Hershberger of Kalona. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Samuel on March 7, 1997; 3 sisters - Velma Swartzendruber, Mabel Yoder, Viola Bontrager; and a brother - Leo Hershberger.
A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona Mennonite Church.
