Elizabeth "Betty" Mary Soukup was born January 20, 1916 in rural Washington County near Ainswoth, Iowa the daughter of Walter and Mabel (Hendrickson) Owen. She graduated form Columbus Junction High School. On November 25, 1936 she was united in marriage to Melvin Soukup. They had two sons Richard and James. They farmed in rural Ainsworth and Betty worked as a homemaker, sold Avon, worked at the Ainsworth Drug Store and was a cook at the Washington County Hopsital. They retired to Washington in 1978 and Betty moved to Kalona in 1993. She was a member of the Salem Church of God and the Highland Social Club. Betty died on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona following a long illness at the age of 91 years. Betty is survived by a son Richard Soukup and wife Iris of Kalona; five grandsons - Kirk Soukup and wife Karen of Middletown; Mark Soukup and wife Jana of Pryor, OK.; Brad Soukup of Muscatine; Dallas Soukup and wife Gena of Pryor, OK.; Kyle Soukup and wife Laura of Coralville; 11 great grandchildren and a great great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in July of 1979; a son James; two brothers and their wives Warren and Roberta Owen, Max and Edith Owen, and her twin sister and her husband Mary and Raymond Shy.
A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice.
