Elbert Allen White was born on July 24, 1920 near Garden Grove, in Decatur County, IA, the son of Elbert R. And Sarah Jane Jones White. His family moved to North English in 1929. Allen graduated from North English High School, attended Kletzing College in Oskaloosa and attended two years at Iowa State teachers College in Cedar Falls. Allen was united in marriage to Gretchen Irene Floyd in North English, on October 25, 1942. Allen served in the U.S. Army in Europe during WW II. He lost a leg as a result of a land mine explosion. He worked as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal service for 35 years, retiring in 1979. Allen was a member of the Pleasant Grove Grace Brethren Church, where he was active as a Moderator, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent and Deacon. He was a life member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. Allen died following a brief illness on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo, IA. He lived 86 years, 4 months and 15 days. He is survived by his wife Gretchen White of North English, IA; a son Mark White (Janelle) of Rosedale, IN; 4 grandchildren: Eric White, Ryan White, Chrissie, Mrs. Kevin Walker and Jeannette, Mrs Colin Gabhart; 4 great grandchildren: Andrew Allen Walker, Evan Walker, Olivia Gabhart and Annika Gabhart.. Also surviving are sisters Evelyn Van Rossum of Shenandoah, IA and Mary Frye of Moberly, MO, and a number of nieces and nephews, Allen was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Phillip, Kenneth and Stanley White and sisters Alice Knipfer and Elizabeth Watson. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, December 11, 2006 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English with Pastor Edwin Jordan officiating Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Friends may call at the Powell Funeral Home in North English, IA on Sunday, December 10th from 4 P.M. to 8 P.M.. A memorial fund has been established for the Pleasant Grove Grace Brethren Church.
