Edwin D. Slabach was born November 12, 1916, in Kokomo, Indiana, the son of David and Emma Yoder Slabach. He attended rural schools in Indiana. On February 17, 1938, he was united in marriage to Nona Miller in Kokomo, Indiana. They moved to the Kalona area in 1951. Edwin and Nona enjoyed winters in Sarasota, Florida since 1950. He was a charter member of the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church, and attended Palm Grove Mennonite Church while in Florida. He loved the Lord and had a heart for those who were less fortunate. Edwin was a farmer, developer and entrepreneur. He enjoyed buying and selling antiques. Edwin died Friday, December 17, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa at the age of 94 years. Edwin is survived by seven children - Herman and wife Sonya of Kalona; Elsie Lewis of Cleveland, Ohio; Freeman of Sarasota, Florida; Lloyd and wife Karen of Sarasota, Florida; David and wife Beverly of Kalona; Norma Slabach of Sarasota, Florida; Kathy Bender and husband David of Sarasota, Florida; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a half brother Marvin Slabach of Westcliffe, Colorado; and a half sister Martha Yoder of Versailles, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Nona on May 19, 2007; three sisters - Alma Beachy, Erma Bontrager; Arie Kauffman; and three brothers - Levi, Albert and Henry. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church in Kalona. Pastor's John King, Floyd Helmuth and Floyd Yutzy will officiate. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Monday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church Mission Program.
