Edward J. Callaway, 78, of Mt. Pleasant, IA died Saturday, July 05, 2008, at Arbor Court in Mt. Pleasant, IA. Visitation for Mr. Callaway will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, beginning after 2:00 p.m., at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel of Mt. Pleasant, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at 10:00 a.m., at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bob David officiating. Memorials have been established to the Mt. Pleasant VFW Post #2561, the American Legion Post #58 or to Midwest Old Threshers. Burial with military rites will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Born December 29, 1929, in Mt. Pleasant, IA, Edward Joel was the son of Alonzo B. and Nelda B. Luzadder Callaway. He attended Mt. Pleasant Schools. In 1951, Ed joined the United States Army. Corporal Callaway was discharged on February 12, 1953. Edward married Roberta Scarff on August 17, 1955 in Milan, IL. She survives. A lifelong Mt. Pleasant resident, Ed was an auto body technician. He enjoyed working with cars and was employed by Ross Shafer Auto for several years. For eleven years he worked for the Mt. Pleasant Utilities in the maintenance department as a fireman engineer. Ed was an avid midget, go cart and stock car racer for fifteen years, and was known as Sonny Callaway in the racing circuit. Along with his wife, Roberta, Ed is survived by two daughters, Linda Dovenspike and Connie and her husband Duane Meth, all of Mt. Pleasant and one sister, Wanda (Harlan) Aronson of Bettendorf, IA. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Misty Burns, Michael Dovenspike and Travis Meth; along with five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Shelbie, Savannah, Cole and Cayla. Edward was preceded in death by his parents.
