Edward F. "Bud" Long, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Salem, IA, died Friday, May 09, 2008 at the Park Place Long Term Care Unit in Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Long has donated his body to the Carver College of Medicine for medical research. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the Faith Christian Outreach Church in Mt. Pleasant A Celebration of Life service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the church with Pastors Monte Knudsen and Tom Roberts officiating. Memorials have been established to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital and Faith Christian Outreach Church. The Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Edward F. "Bud" Long was born December 31, 1919, in Mt. Pleasant, IA, the son of Ellis E. and Ruth A. Bruhn Long. He lived in Salem, IA, for 49 years. On April 7, 1945, he married Marilyn Wandling in Mt. Pleasant. She survives. Bud worked at the Mt. Pleasant Bottling Company, drove a delivery truck and did carpentry work. He was later employed at Sheaffer Pen for nine years, and was a lathe operator for Keith Garretson Equipment. For seventeen and one-half years he worked as a metal worker for General Electric in Burlington, IA. He retired in 1981. Bud was an active member of Faith Christian Outreach Church. He was also a volunteer at Henry County RSVP for many years. Along with his wife, Bud received the Citizen's of the Year Award from the Chamber of Commerce in 2002. Bud enjoyed visiting with friends in the hospital and nursing homes. He especially loved spending time with his family. Along with his wife, Marilyn, he is survived by one son, Dean Long of Mt. Pleasant, IA; two daughters, Diana Sandage of Birmingham, IA, and Jerry (Gail) Birdsall of Loveland, CO; one brother, Roy "Jack" Long of Sarasota, Fl, and one sister-in-law, Sally (Larry) Vickroy of Mt. Pleasant, IA. He is also survived by five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are two grandchildren of the heart, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, a sister in infancy and a sister-in-law, Alice Long.
