Edna Martha McKenna was born on March 28, 1913 near Keswick, IA, a daughter of Hugh and Anna Bender Brady. She graduated from Keswick High School in 1931 and received her Normal Training Certificate from Ottumwa Heights College. She went on to receive her BA Degree from William Penn College in Oskaloosa in the 1960's. Edna started teaching at Elm Grove country school, then taught in Parnell and North English. She later taught a number of years in Rock Island, IL, where she lived until her retirement. Edna then moved to North English. She was united in marriage to Thomas McKenna in 1937, in Keswick, IA. They lived on the family farm north of Kinross. He preceded her in death on August 17, 1961. Edna had a keen sense of humor, was an avid card player, and loved gardening, fishing and her dog. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. She is survived by sons: Pat McKenna (Mary Ann) of North English, IA; John McKenna (Eleanor) of Towson, MD; Hugh McKenna of Coralville, IA; Ellen Hines (Rick) of Naperville, IL; Dan McKenna of North English, IA; twins: Neal McKenna (Kim) of Chana, IL and Ned McKenna (Kathryn) of Colona, IL; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Mary Lou Brady of Colorado Springs, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter Delphia McKenna, a grand daughter Karla Weber; brothers: George and Thomas Brady; sisters Delphia Devine, Sister Mary Hugh Brady, Ellen Doyle, Mary Baird, Rita Thomas and Frances Hayes and a daughter-in-law Mary McKenna. Edna Martha McKenna, age 93, died following a brief illness on Sunday, October 22, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, IA. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 25, 2006, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English with the Rev. Pat Lumsden officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick Little Creek Cemetery near Kinross. Visitation will be at the Powell Funeral Home in North English, from 4 PM to 7:30 PM on Tuesday, October 24, 2006, with a wake service following.
