Edith "Edie" Murphy, 97, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, IA passed away Monday, August 31, 2015 at LaVerna Village in Savannah, MO. The family will greet friends beginning at 9 a.m., on Thursday, September 3, 2015, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, 709 E. Mapleleaf Drive. A funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Jim Hughes officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Born September 19, 1917 in Burlington, Iowa, Edith May Murphy was the daughter of Martin and Grace (Hartman) Petersen. Edith spent her formative years in Burlington and attended Burlington schools until 5th grade. The family moved to Cicero, Illinois and later Berwyn, Illinois. In Cicero she was adopted by her stepfather Charles Anderson. She graduated from Cicero School System. On November 28, 1938, she married Thomas Murphy. They later divorced. Moving to Mount Pleasant in the late 1960's, Edith worked as a line worker and cook at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown, Iowa. She later was employed at Metromail as a machine operator. She moved to Savannah, MO five years ago. Edie enjoyed having coffee with her friends and she loved to bake. She formerly attended the Lincoln Street Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, Tom (Linda) Murphy of Burlington, IA; one daughter, Pat Jacobs of Savannah, MO; nine grandchildren, Tami Armstrong, Deron Jacobs, Tina Jacobs, Chris Murphy, Kelly Johns, Mike Murphy, Tim Murphy, Jill Clay and Dustin McWilliams; fifteen great-grandchildren, Josh Jacobs, Zach McWilliams, Daniel Johns, Tara Johns, Kyle Hartenstein, Forrest Clay, Nolan Clay, Tallen McWilliams, Kelsey McWilliams, Erica Jacobs, Jason Jacobs, Kayla Huffman, Tommy Wilson, Tara Armstrong and Randy Armstrong; four great, great grandchildren; and sister Peggy McCown of Las Vegas, NV. Preceding Edith in death are her parents; a daughter, Ginger McWilliams; two brothers, LaMonte Petersen, Charles Anderson and Raymond Klein; sisters, Ruth Jensen and Betty Brenneke; and son-in-laws, Leo "Jake" Jacobs and Chuck McWilliams.
