Edith George, 92, of Lockridge, IA, died Friday, March 28, 2008, at the Jefferson County Hospital. Open visitation will be held beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Augustana Lutheran Church of Lockridge with Pastor Fran Griffeth officiating. Burial will be in the Lockridge Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the First Augustana Lutheran Church and to the Lockridge First Responders. On line condolences may be sent to www.olsonpowell.com Born February 27, 1916, in Henry County, IA, Edith May was the daughter of Martin and Bessie (Long) Johnson. She graduated from Lockridge High School in 1934. She also received teacher's training at Parson's College in Fairfield. On December 28, 1938, Edith married John "Tiny" George in her parent's home in rural Lockridge. He preceded her in death on July 7, 1981. Edith taught for two years at a rural country school north of Lockridge and also cooked at the Lockridge School for several years. She was a charter member of the Lockridge Kitchen Band and later enjoyed a trip to perform at the Iowa State Fair. Edith was an avid bird watcher, loved to play Pitch, and enjoyed gardening. She grew beautiful flowers and it gave her great pleasure as she shared them with shut-ins. Edith was a wonderful cook and was instrumental in helping establish the congregate meals in Lockridge. She never met a stranger. Edith was an active member of the First Augustana Lutheran Church of Lockridge and was a member of the WELCA. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, Melvin (Judy) George of Hamilton, IL, and John (Karen) George of Northfield, MN; eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. Along with her husband, John, she was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Edna Johnson and Vivian Countryman.
