Edith Day, 91, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Monday, May 04, 2015, at the Pleasant Manor Care Center. An open visitation will be from 12 noon-7 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2015, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 9th, at the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Deborah Stowers officiating. Interment will be at Forest Home Cemetery. Born January 2, 1924 at the Henry County Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, Edith Alma was the daughter of Joseph Wilhelm and Martha Bertha (Ploeger) Timmerman. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. On February 9, 1944, she married Eugene Barnes. He preceded her in death on October 19, 1964. She married Jake Paul Day on March 4, 1972. He preceded her in death on September 17, 2006. Edith grew up in the Beulah Church area and lived in the Mt. Pleasant community all her life. For 26 years she was the head operator at the Mt. Pleasant Telephone Company which later became Contel and then GTE. She retired from this position in 1980. After retirement she had her own upholstery business. Edith and Jake traveled many places in a camper and wintered in Texas and Florida. A devoted wife and mother, Edith also loved and lived for her grandchildren and always had a cookie on hand to share. She was known for her wonderful pies with cherry and gooseberry being the most requested. She enjoyed working in her flower gardens. A wonderful seamstress, she sewed many school bags and quilts. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and belonged to UMW. Survivors include a son, Allan (Evie) Barnes of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a daughter, Pamela Barnes of Lyons, CO; a step son, James (Paulett) Day of Des Moines, IA; one step daughter, Marsha Mitchell of Centerville, IA; 10 grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 19 step-great grandchildren; 2 great, great grandchildren; 2 step-great, great grandchildren; a son-in-law, Jeff Hall; and a step-son-in-law, Jim Kearney. Also surviving is a special friend and neighbor, Susie Lund. Preceding her in death were her parents; her first husband, Eugene; her second husband, Jake; one daughter, Sheila Hall; two sisters, Margaret Remick and Marie Gates; six brothers, Roy, Carl, Glen, Orval, Guy, and Paul Timmerman; a step-daughter, Carol Kearney; and one infant stepson, Dennis Day.
