HARPER-Earl R. Baumert, age 68, died Thursday, October 19, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a short illness. Earl was born August 9, 1938, near Harper, to George W. and Lottie (Maule) Baumert. He attended country school until second grade, graduated from Keota High School and attended Coe College. On September 1, 1957, he married Wanda Blattner in Washington. The couple lived and farmed in the Harper area. Earl was a member of the United Church of Faith in Keota and served as a board member of the Old Sleepy Eye Pottery Collectors Club. He enjoyed sports, collecting antiques and crocks, visiting, deer hunting, his grandchildren's activities, slow pitch softball and was a State Fair Champion Tractor Puller. Survivors include his wife: Wanda of Harper; four children: Teri and husband Tom Garrett of Arkansas, Laurie and husband Ed Hammes, Mark and wife LeeAnn and Mike and wife Andrea, all of the Harper area; eleven grandchildren: Grant and Kelly Garrett, Amanda, Eric and Evan Hammes, Danielle, Brittany, Bailey and Spencer Baumert and Dawson and Addison Baumert; two sisters: Pauline Morgan of Boulder City, Nevada and Bettie Baumert of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 23, 2006, at the United Church of Faith in Keota with Pastor Sallie Graves and Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be at the Keota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 22, 2006, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. A memorial fund has been established for the Wilson Memorial Library Museum Fund. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
