Parnell- Edward Cecil Long, was born September 18, 1924, near North English, Iowa, a son of Charles E. And Ida S. (Moffit) Long. He attended school in Green Valley, North English High School and graduated from Kinross High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943-1945. On June 11, 1946, he was united in marriage to Catherine Bernadette McCarty in Parnell, Iowa. He was a custodian and bus driver for the Parnell and Williamsburg Schools. Cecil enjoyed dancing with his wife Bernadette and playing golf. He also was an avid Cub's and Hawkeye fan. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Parnell American Legion and served on the Parnell Town Council for 15 years. Cecil died on Thursday, February 26, 2009, at the English Valley Care Center in North English following a brief illness, at the age of 84 years. He is survived by 2 sons: Gregory (Laurie) Long and Dennis (Patricia) Long all of Aurora, IL; 6 grandchildren: Jennifer Thatcher, Julie Sigg, Elizabeth Faestel, Ryan Malloy, Molly McWilliam and Justine Long; 2 great grandchildren: Jack Thatcher and Lindsey Sigg; brother: Lyle (Barbara) Long of Cedar Rapids and a son-in-law: Dave Malloy of Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bernadette, 2 daughters: Cheryl Long and Cathy Malloy; a sister: Grace Long as an infant and a brother: Gene Long. Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell. Fr. Joseph Roost will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Parnell. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 7 PM at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. There will be a vigil prayer service at 7:00pm on Monday. Memorials are for the English Valley Care Center, Iowa City Hospice or American Cancer Society. A general memorial fund has been established.
