WELLMAN - Dr. John R. Nye was born December 26, 1932, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of John Samuel and Gertrude Nellie (Lee) Nye. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and got his B.A., M.S., and Ph.D., from Iowa State University in Sociology. John served in the United States Army during the Korean war as a Chaplain Assistant. On February 18, 1966, John was united in marriage to Martha Ann Usher at the Collegiate Methodist Church in Ames. John was a professor in the Sociology Department at the University of Nebraska in Omaha for 10 ½ years until retiring in 1979. While teaching he was also the Director of the center for Urban Affairs at the University of Nebraska. A member of the Psi Chi Honorary Society and Alpha Kappa Delta Honorary Society. John was a member of the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church. He was a handyman and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. On February 26, 2020 John went to be with his Lord and Saviour at the age of 87 years.
John is survived by his wife Martha of Wellman, 5 children: John (Sue) Nye of River Ridge, LA; Joanna Posten of Ypsilanti, MI; Joy Nye of Opelousas, LA; Twila Nye of Richland, MI. and Thomas (Shari) Nye of Wellman, 18 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, and a sister Linda (John) Terrones of Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: LeRoy, Richard, infant Jackie, and a sister Karen Duckworth.
Celebration Of Life Service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, March 1, 2020 at Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, February 29, 2020 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A memorial fund has been established for the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church.
