Dorothy L. Smith, 86, of the Mt. Pleasant and Salem communities, died Friday, March 5, 2010 at Arbor Court. Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon on Monday, March 8th at Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, where a rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the rosary until 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Phung celebrant. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the Alzheimer's Association or to Hospice Compassus of Cedar Rapids. On line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com . Born January 24, 1924, in Dovray, MN, Dorothy was the daughter of August E. and Mabel Ellen (Mattison) Cohrs. Dorothy spent her formative years in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. She graduated from high school in Donna, TX. On February 7, 1944, she married William R. "Bill" Smith in Denver, CO. He preceded her in death on January 9, 1991. Dorothy was a homemaker and worked in various offices. She was a cashier at the Salem Bank and also a Mary Kay consultant. She was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, the South Center Club and in earlier years sang with the Sweet Adelines. Dorothy enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by a daughter, Rosemary (Dan) Brown of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a son-in-law, Kenneth Lewis of East Bernard, TX; and three grandchildren, J Brown, Susan Hlavinka and Robin Boettcher. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren, Tara, Lauren, Blake and Patrick Hlavinka and Andrew, Amanda, Brooke and Jonathan Boettcher. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; a daughter Alicia Lewis; six brothers and one sister.
