WELLMAN - Dorothy Darlene Schumann was born January 22, 1938 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Niva (Miller) Burkholder. She graduated from Wellman High School in 1956. On June 1, 1956, Dorothy was united in marriage to Paul Schumann at the Wellman Mennonite Church. Dorothy owned and operated Stitch 'N Sew Cottage in Kalona for many years. She was an active member of the Wellman Mennonite Church, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School and was involved with church sewing. She also volunteered on the quilt committee for the MCC Sale and she made many quilts for the sale. Dorothy was a member of the Kountry Quilters. Dorothy passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2020, at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 82 years.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Paul; six children: David (Grace) Schumann of Wellman, Debra (Darrell) Kudobe of Mount Pleasant, Wesley (Brenda) Schumann of Dickinson, ND, Delwin (Pamela) Schumann of Anamosa, Beverly (Stephen) Stude of Brewster, MN, and Candelina (Curtis) Helmuth of Kalona. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren: Kristin (Ben) Peiffer, Tonia (Shawn) Poole, Kyle Kudobe, Rachel (Barron) Davis, Emily (Zach) Sunderland, Joshua (Ashley) Schumann, Jacob (Jacque) Schumann, Nathaniel (Cydney) Stude, Nicholas (Briana) Stude, Matthew Stude, William Schumann, Hannah Schumann, Cierra Helmuth, Niva Helmuth, Jaimee Helmuth, Molly Helmuth, Makayla Helmuth; 9 great grandchildren; and a brother Donald Burkholder of Shady Cove, OR. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, February 20, 2020, at the Wellman Mennonite Church in Wellman. Rev. Don Patterson will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-8 PM on Wednesday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman where the family will greet friends from 3-5 and 6-8 PM. A memorial fund has been established for Washington County Hospice and Mennonite Central Committee.
