SIGOURNEY- Dorothy M. Phelps, age 93, of Sigourney, died Wednesday, February1, 2006, at Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney. Dorothy was born February 2, 1912 in Pryor, Oklahoma, to Rollo B. And Fannie Mabel (Ripple) Hoffman. She graduated from Sigourney High School and attended Parsons College. On June 19, 1932, she married Charles T. Phelps in Ainsworth, Iowa. The couple owned and operated Phelps Auto Supply in Sigourney until retiring in 1967. Dorothy was a member of the Sigourney United Methodist Church, where she served as church organist for about 70 years, United Methodist Women, Literature, Music and Garden Departments of the Sigourney Women's Club, Order of the Eastern Star, T.T.T., P.E.O., Stitch and Study, Happy Hour, American Guild of Organists and the Keokuk County Historical Society. She also played the organ at St. Mary Catholic Church for about 20 years. Survivors include two children: Mary Louise Schlesinger of Boulder, Colorado and Thomas Dean and wife Elizabeth Phelps of Orange County, California; three grandsons: Arthur and Thomas Schlesinger and Charles Phelps; six great grandchildren: Gardner, Dara, Divya and Jay Schlesinger, Riley and Avonlea Phelps; one brother: John Hoffman of Yakima, Washington; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Charles in 1973; sister: Mildred Hess and a brother in infancy: Paul Hoffman. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February11, 2006, at the Sigourney United Methodist Church, with Rev. John Hembry officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2005, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where the family will be present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established in Dorothy's name for the Sigourney United Methodist Church. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
