Dorothy M. Savely Burns, 89 of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Thursday, May 14, 2009, at the Baylor Regional Medical Center in Grapevine, TX. Visitation will begin after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. A Christian Vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m., at the Memorial Chapel. The funeral mass will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Phung celebrant. Interment will be in the St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and Mooseheart, a children's home, supported by The Loyal Order of the Moose. Born January 17, 1920, in Delaware County, IA, Dorothy Mae was the daughter of Charles J. and Louise Bertha Eggimann Orr. She was a graduate of Mediapolis High School. On May 10, 1939, she married Paul Wayne Savely in Burlington, IA. He preceded her in death in August of 1954. On October 1, 1957, Dorothy married Robert Burns in Muscatine, IA. Dorothy was a homemaker and worked with home child care in Burlington. After her marriage, she followed her husband in the military and became a tailor on the Army base. The couple later moved to Charles City before settling in Mt. Pleasant. Dorothy worked for many years at Sheaffer Pen until the plant closed. She then went to work for John Green's clothing store. Dorothy worked along side of her husband Robert on the farm. After Robert passed away, Dorothy worked for several years as a home health aid through the Henry County Health Center. Dorothy loved canning vegetables, cooking, baking, and making her famous pickles, ketchup, and applesauce. She enjoyed working in her yard, traveling extensively and wintering in Texas. She was also a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and a lifetime member of The Women of the Moose. Survivors include two daughters, Fredine Purvis of Silvis, IL, and Robyn (Ted) Bowling of Flower Mound, TX; a daughter-in-law, Juanita Savely of Mt. Pleasant, IA; one sister, Arlene Seager of Milan, IL; and one brother Lloyd Orr of Mt. Pleasant, IA. Also surviving are three grandsons, Dennis (Kathy) Purvis, Darryl Purvis and Kevin Savely; four granddaughters, Angela Purvis, Kim (Otis) Henkle, Marinda Madden and April Madden; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Burns was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; a son, Larry Savely; a son-in-law, Stanley Purvis; three sisters, Mary Thomas, Karolena Orr and Bonnie Miller; and by two brothers Paul Orr and Charles Orr.
