Dorothy M. Hardy, 87, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, formerly of Harlan, IA, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2019, at Park Place Elder Living.

The family will host an open house to celebrate Dorothys life on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at Arbor Village South, 126 W. Stonebrook Dr., Mt. Pleasant, IA, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.Gifts of love and friendship may be given to Desota Bend National Wildlife Refuge or Every Step Hospice. Born February 4, 1931, in Carson, IA, Dorothy Mae was the daughter of William and Cleone (Griffis) Bates. She was a 1949 graduate of Missouri Valley High School in Missouri Valley, IA. On September 23, 1950, Dorothy married Franklin J. Hardy in Missouri Valley. When her children were older, she returned to school, attending Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, IA.

As a young girl, Dorothy was a member of the first Iowa All State Choir. In 1956, she moved to Harlan and used her singing talents in the United Methodist Church choir, of which she was a church member for many years. She was a P.E.O. member while living in Harlan. Dorothy had a passion for nature and bird watching. She lived in Mukilteo, WA, for five years, prior to moving to Crawfordsville, IA, in 2001. Throughout Dorothys life her highest priority was being a wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker.

Along with her loving husband, Dr. Franklin J. Hardy, D.D.S, of 68 years, Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Carolyn (Robert) Jensen of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Diane (Shuichi) Yamaguchi of Mukilteo, WA; a brother, Gordon Bates of Colorado Springs, CO; and a sister Sharron (Jim) Ryan of Longmont, CO; and a sister-in-law, Judy Bates of Charlottesville, VA. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Sarah (Billy) Taylor, Reid (Abbie) Jensen, Maya Yamaguchi, and Alisa Yamaguchi, along with four great-grandchildren, Kira and Sophia Taylor and Neva and Milo Jensen.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Carroll Bates; and a sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and William Johnson.
