Dorothy Garringer

Williamsburg-Dorothy Sophia Garringer was born July 31, 1925 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of August and Anna (Kleinmeyer) Fritz. She attended Lutheran Interparish School in Williamsburg. Dorothy was united in marriage to Donald Lester Garringer on November 22, 1943 in Marengo. To this union they were blessed with 6 children. They later divorced. She has lived her whole life in the Iowa County area. She worked for Amana Refrigeration for 35 years. Dorothy was an active volunteer for HACAP and Highland Ridge Retirement Community in which she received the Iowa Governors Volunteer Award. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed taking part in activities and was a member of the Machinist Union Lodge 1526. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with family and friends, working in the yard, going for walks and playing solitaire. Dorothy passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at her home at the age of 91 years.

She is survived by six children: Donna (Glen) Salyer of Andalusia, AL, John (Helen) Garringer of Van Horne, Marie (John) Eberhardt of Montrose, Alan Garringer of North English, Rand (Sharry) Garringer of Marengo and Jayne (Alex) Garcia of North English; 15 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren; a brother: Verne Bendorf of TN and a sister: Judy Lawson of Marengo. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter Anita, two brothers: Julius Bendorf and Theodore Fritz and two sisters: Mary Ann Garringer and Martha Fritz.

Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Monday, May 8, 2017 at the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Williamsburg. Burial will be at Yankee Point Cemetery rural North English. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Memorials are for St. Paul United Methodist Church.
