Dorothea A. Hicks, age 82, of Guernsey, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2022, at Brooklyn Community Estate. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 3, 2022, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn with Father Scott Lemaster officiating. Burial will be in the Guernsey Cemetery, Guernsey. Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 2, 2022, at Kloster Funeral Home in Brooklyn, with a rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Hick’s family CSF Scholarship Program at BGM.
Dorothea is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Marvin of Guernsey; her daughters Sara Hicks (Mike O’Connell) of Leawood, KS., Mary Carver of Edmond, OK., and Helen Hicks-Wenthold (Paul) of West Lafayette, IN., her five grandchildren Michael O’Connell of Ames, Marshall Carver (Sarah Coston Rule) of Washington D.C., Veronica Carver of Florence, Italy, and Gregory and Joseph Hicks-Wenthold of West Lafayette, IN. Dorothea is also survived by her brother Bernie (Ginny) Janssen of Eddyville and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, a niece Jean Schuster Ragner and two sisters Joan Schuster Molyneaux and Mary Lou Webb.
Dorothea Ann Janssen was born December 14, 1939, in Oskaloosa, Iowa the third daughter of Ben and Verna Gasper Janssen. She attended rural Blaine school in Mahaska County and graduated from Eddyville high school with the class of 1957. On Valentine’s Day in 1960, Dorothea attended a dance while in college, this is where she met Marvin Hicks and they danced the night away. Dorothea received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from the Iowa State Teachers College in 1961. After college she taught in Williamsburg for two years. Dorothea was united in marriage to Marvin Hicks on June 22, 1963, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ottumwa. Dorothea was very committed to education, being a homemaker and raising her daughters. She taught 2 nd grade religious education at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn for nearly 20 years, she was a member of the Mahaska County 4-H and a leader for the Lincoln Lucky Lassies 4-H club. Dorothea managed the Flag Store in Brooklyn and also sold her antiques there. She was proud of her heritage and spent time doing genealogy. She was very involved with the CSF Scholarship Program at BGM, making it her mission to give the students the opportunity to help with their future education. Dorothea enjoyed antiques, collectable jewelry, going shopping and taking pictures. Her daughters and grandchildren were the most important thing to her, and she especially enjoyed spending time with them and attending their events.
