Doris Welcher

Doris Welcher, 79, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away Friday, July 5, 2013, at her son's home in Athens, AL, following an extended battle with cancer. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at the Memorial Chapel, with The Rev. Jeff McPheron officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Hospice of Limestone County in Alabama and also to the family, who would like to donate a bench seat on the walking path between Linden Heights and East Lake Park. A life-long, resident of Mt. Pleasant, Doris Jean, was born on August 25, 1933, in Mt. Pleasant to Linus J. Kerfus and Ruby Remick Kerfus. She attended Mt. Pleasant Schools. On February 4, 1971, she married Lee Welcher in Mt. Pleasant. He preceded her in death on September 9, 1991. For 26 years, Doris worked on the line at Heatilator. She spent many of those years working on assembling glass doors. Doris retired in 1995. Doris had many hobbies and interest, but her biggest enjoyment came from spending time with her family. She particularly enjoyed camping. She liked to plant flowers in her yard, bake, cook, and read. She especially liked to read romance novels. Hearts and Solitaire were two of Doris's favorite card games. She was an avid coffee drinker and drank a pot of coffee each morning. She enjoyed sewing and spending time with her cocker spaniels. She was of the Lutheran faith. Doris is survived by two daughters, Shirley (Bob) McDonald of West Burlington, IA, and Janice Carpenter of Mt. Pleasant, IA; three sons, Leonard (Ann) Ford and David Ford, both of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Randy (Sara) Welcher of Athens, Alabama; and one sister, Loretta Hite of Mt. Pleasant, IA. Doris had many that consider her Mom. There was a special place in her heart for Donny Stevens, Tim Dameron, Paul Ginkens and Michael Cogswell. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
