Millersburg- Doris was born October 19, 1924 to Frank and Darline (Shifflet) Rogers in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She attended Cross Lutheran School and graduated from Ohama South High School where she was the editor of the school newspaper. After Graduation she became a Rosie the Rivetor at the Glen L. Martin Plant during World War II. She met Francis Larson there and they were married and had two children, Elaine and Eric. Francis died in 1950. Doris met and married David McCartney in 1951. He had two young sons, John and Joe, and they became a blended family.
The couple farmed all their lives, raising cattle, hogs, horses, and other livestock. They were long time members of the Community Church of Deep River. They were also active in Iowa County Farm Bureau Cattlemen, Pork Producers, and Conservation groups.
Doris was an avid writer. She wrote many feature stories for newspapers, and a weekly column called the Stone Jar. She was honored with several Iowa Press Women’s Awards in her career.
Doris is survived by a daughter, Elaine Larson Clarke (Waterloo, IA) and a son, Eric Larson (Hobe Sound, FL); grandchildren Kristin (Louis) Simmons, Garrett Larson, Kerry McCartney, and Kent McCartney; great grandchildren Braden, Chloee, Mckenzie Simmons; Daughters-in-law Dania (Tom) Phelps, Cherrie McCartney, and Jane McCartney; a sister Patti Boyette and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both husbands, sons John and Joe McCartney, son-in-law Dennis Clarke, brothers and their spouses Francis (Duane) Mardelle, Ronald (Ruth) Rogers, and Arthur (Jaye) Rogers and a sister Mary Joyce (Heimer) Johnson, sisters-in-law Irene Wess, Edna Johnson, Mrytle Johnson and Elsie Miller, and a brother-in-law Duane (Patricia) Boyette.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am on Thursday, February 23, 2023, at Community Church in Deep River. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery, Deep River.
