Donald R. Burns, Sr., 77, of Salem, IA, passed away at 3:23 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at his home.Open visitation will begin after 9 a.m., on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel. Visitation will continue until the time of the memorial service at 1 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel with Pastor Daniel Haffner of the Hillsboro Christian Church, officiating. After the service burial will be held at the Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington, IA. Gifts of love and friendship may be given to the Hillsboro Christian Church or HCI Care Services. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com Born January 31, 1940, in rural Richland, MO, Donald Ray, was the son of John Osbin and Arlis Martha (Smith) Burns. His early education was at Portageville, MO. When old enough, Donald, helped his parents pick cotton. Donald moved with his parents to Illinois in 1955. In 1960, he went to work at Winegard in Burlington, IA. He married Helen Poindexter in 1961, and they later divorced. Donald moved to Florida and worked for a fencing company. While in Florida he married Harriet Northup, and they later divorced. In 1980 Donald moved back to Mt. Pleasant, IA and went to work for Heatilator. After a lay off from there in 1981, he went to work at Ceco Steel Buildings in Mt. Pleasant and worked until his retirement in 2004. He married Mary Ann Allsup in 1982 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Donald enjoyed fishing, coon hunting and spending time with his coonhounds.Along with his wife, Mary Ann, Donald is survived by two sons, Donald Ray Burns, Jr. of Pensacola, Florida, and Douglas Eugene (Michelle) Burns of Waterloo, IA; one daughter, Sara Burns of Hillsboro, IA; one stepson, Charles J. Allsup of Augustine, FL; two brothers, Edward (Juanita) Burns of York, PA, and John (Anne) Burns of McComb, IL; two sisters, Wanda Burns of Bull Shoals, AR, and Carol Wolf of Burlington, IA; twelve grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.Preceding Donald in death were his parents and four brothers, Robert Burns, Raymond Burns, Carl Burns, and a brother in infancy.
