Donald Prottsman

October 6, 1920 — January 11, 2011

Donald W. Prottsman, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Arbor Court. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 14th, beginning at noon at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. that evening. There will be no funeral service. A private burial will be held in the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the Henry County Animal Rescue Organization. Born October 6, 1920, in rural Yarmouth, IA, Donald William was the son of Verne and Florence (Canby) Prottsman. He was a 1939 graduate of Hillsboro High School. Mr. Prottsman entered the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater with the Third Army during World War II. He was discharged from the service with a rank of Staff Sergeant. On May 19, 1944, Donald married Leola W. Hummell in Detroit, MI. She preceded him in death on January 20, 2007. Donald worked on his dairy farm in the early years immediately after the war and also worked at. the Sheaffer Pen Company. He was later employed at the Mt. Pleasant Co-op Elevator. For many years, he was the water treatment manager at the Mt. Pleasant Mental Health Institute until the time of his retirement. Donald loved spending time outdoors on his acreage, growing trees, mushroom hunting and spending countless hours mowing on his tractor. He was a seasoned horse shoe pitcher and had participated in the World Horse Shoe Tournaments. He was also an avid fan of the Hawkeye's Mens Basketball teams. Survivors include his son, Leo Prottsman of Gettysburg, PA; one daughter, Jane Prottsman of Mt. Pleasant, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Leola, and five brothers, Dale, Harold, Wendell, Leo and Robert Prottsman.
