Donald James Meyer, age 88, of Amana, died February 2, 2019, at the VA Hospital in Iowa City, where he received excellent care. Funeral service will be held at Noon, Thursday, February 7, 2019 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m., until service time, Thursday, February 7, 2019, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the Iowa City VA, c/o Voluntary Services, 601 Hwy 6 West, Iowa City, Iowa 52240.
Don was born January 11, 1931, in Iowa City, to John and Frances Coufal Meyer. He grew up in Amana and graduated from Amana High School in 1948. He married Dolores Ceynar December 9, 1952. Don joined the Marines in 1949 and was called to serve in Korea in 1950, where he was wounded and received a purple heart. He ended his service in 1952.
Don worked for the Amana Farm Department for 22 years, at Kraus Manufacturing in Walford for 15 years, and at Amana Refrigeration in the tool and dye department for 13 years. Don enjoyed fishing, bird watching, working in his amazing garden, walking through the timber, basically anything outdoors, and his pets.
Don is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dolores Meyer; one daughter Patricia Meyer (Ron Ellison), of Ottumwa; a son-in-law Ben Lathrop of Oskaloosa; two grandchildren Colby Johnson, of Oskaloosa, and Kelsy Meyer, of France; a sister Dolores Lewis, of Wayland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Charlotte Meyer, a brother Richard and two sisters Marie Ruegsegger and Ruth Ehrmann.
