Donald Garmoe

Donald Garmoe, 83, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Wednesday, September 09, 2015, at Sunnybrook Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant. Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon on Monday, September 14th at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Monday evening.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 15th at 10:30 a.m. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel with Pastor Rick Moorman officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Oakland Mills Community Church and Boy Scout Troop 24. Born May 22, 1932 in Mt. Pleasant, IA, Donald Rex was the son of Lloyd and Velma (Samuelson) Garmoe. He was a 1950 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. On September 3, 1950, he married Margaret Ford in Mt. Pleasant. For thirty four years, Don worked as a route salesman for the Colonial Baking Company. While he was employed, Don was a member of the Teamsters Union. After forming many friendships along his route, he retired on May 22, 1993. A lifelong Mt. Pleasant resident, spending time with family, especially following his grandchildren's activities, was Don's favorite pastime. He attended Oakland Mills Community Church. Don liked to watch NASCAR and sprint car races. He was a huge St. Louis Cardinal and Iowa Hawkeye fan. Known as a talented square dance caller, Don shared his talent for many years throughout the area. Don is survived by two sons, Richard (Mary Lou) Garmoe of Imperial, MO, and Michael (Deb) Garmoe of Mt. Pleasant, IA; along with five grandchildren, Bob (Jennifer) Garmoe, Tony (Angie) Garmoe, Jennifer (Marcus) Lauffer, Mindy (Clint Newkirk) Garmoe, and Kristen (Victor) Bell. He is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren. Along with his wife, Margaret, Don was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold Garmoe; and a sister, Virginia Elmore.
