KEOTA- Donald Elroy Baumert, age 85, of Burlington, formerly of Washington and Keota, died Sunday, June 14, 2009, just four days shy of his 86th birthday, at Select Specialty Hospital in Davenport, Iowa. Donald was born June 18, 1923, near Keota, Iowa, to Floyd and Pearl (Brock) Baumert. He attended Keota High School with the class of 1940. He worked for Iowa Southern Utilities in Washington and Burlington for 32 years retiring on July 1, 1986. He served in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Hilary P. Jones, and the U.S.S. Colahan DD658 in the Asiatic- Pacific Theater during World War II. He served in seven major campaigns and was listed on Keota's World War II Honor Roll. He enjoyed woodworking, his garden and spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife: Irene of Burlington; three daughters: Gwen Thyen of Washington, Karen Baumert of Coralville and Sara Starr of Iowa City; three sons: Mark, Tracy and Eric Baumert all of Washington; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren: four sisters: Marilyn Van Fleet of North English, Darlene Streets of Gladbrook, Margaret Burk of Bucklin, Missouri and Loretta Streigle of Sigourney; four brothers: Harry Baumert of Sigourney, Dennis Baumert of Keota, Larry Baumert of Marion and Gene Baumert of Keota; numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Norma Baumert and Dorothy Dorsey; four brothers: Paul, Howard, Duane and Glen Baumert. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Rev. Dennis Hopes officiating. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery, with Military rites. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or the family. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Donald and his family.
