Kalona-Dennis Daniel Shetler was born May 21, 1929, near Kalona, Iowa. The son of Jesse Ray and Anna (Hershberger) Shetler. He attended rural Evergreen School. Dennis was united in marriage to Katie Ann Miller on October 11, 1951 in Kalona. He was a lifelong farmer, he also worked for the Iowa City Recreation Department from 1961-1980. The last 29 years he has provided a taxi service for the Amish. He was a member of Sunnyside Mennonite Church and was a MDS volunteer. Dennis enjoyed camping, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, traveling, fishing, was part of the Coffee Club, he dearly loved his family and walked with God. Dennis passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at the age of 91.
He is survived by his wife KatieAnn of Kalona; 6 children, Ruby (Maynard) Miller of Kalona, Darlene Raber of Shipshewana, Indiana, Delmar (Freda) Shetler of Sarasota, Florida, Susan (Keith) Miller of Millersburg, Ohio, Loren (Tanya) Shetler of Ruckersville, Virginia and Karen (Loris) Miller of Millersburg, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; siblings, Alta Yutzy of Hutchinson, Kansas, Mary Jane (Edwin) Miller, Clara Shetler and Ruth Ann Shetler all of Kalona; sisters-in-law, Emma Shetler of Wellman, Penny Shetler of Rising Fawn, Georgia, Janet Shetler of Irwin, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Vernon Miller of Hutchinson, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers, Ellis Shetler, John Shetler, Paul Shetler, Harley Shetler, Albert Shetler, Phillip Shetler; a sister, Magdalena Miller; 2 sister-in-laws, Mildred Shetler and Dorothy Shetler; brother-in-law, Raymond Yutzy and a son-in-law David Raber.
Funeral Services will be 10:00 am on Friday, July 17, 2020 at Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Kalona. Burial will be at East Union Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm at Sunnyside Mennonite Church. The family will be present from 10:00 to 12:00, 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00.
