The son of Lorenzo Wilfred and Zelda Meryl Bridges Fleig, Delbert Ross was born July 15, 1930 at the Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield, IA. He attended a small country school and graduated from Richland High School in 1947. Through a close friend, Delbert met his future wife, Marjorie Ann Sents, and they were married on November 21, 1951. The couple brought into the world Carol Marguerite in 1953, Cynthia Renee in 1955, and Curtis Dean in 1959. Following in his father's footsteps, Delbert worked the family farm, which is a century farm. He was also a dairy farmer until 1977. For 19 years he was a bus driver for Pekin-Packwood School District. He served his country in the United States Army from 1952-1954 and was a member of the Richland American Legion Post 504 for over 60 years. Delbert attended Hopewell Friends Church his whole life until it closed. He then attended Richland Methodist, and was a member at Prairie View United Methodist Church until he and Marge moved to Mt. Pleasant this past summer. The couple spent twelve winters in south Texas meeting new and old friends and enjoying the sunshine. Delbert will always be remembered for his teasing sense of humor, his quick smile, and his hugs. He loved visiting with people. He was an avid mushroom hunter and loved listening to music, especially if Marge was playing the piano or organ. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marge of Mt. Pleasant, IA; daughters, Carol (Grady) Miller of Independence, KS, Cindy (Steve) Hoeksema of West Des Moines, IA and his favorite and only daughter-in-love, Jolene Mitchell Fleig of Mt. Pleasant, IA; grandchildren, Philip (Kelly) Miller, Jonathan (Bridget) Miller, Michelle (Chris) Gordon, Amy (Dennis) Lock, Andrea (Ben) Tigges, Katie Hoeksema, Marcus Fleig and Kiersten Fleig; 8 great-grandchildren and another on the way; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, J.J. Delbert was met in heaven by his son, Curt, who passed away on March 23, 2014; a grandson, Aaron Hoeksema; his sister, Donna; and many close friends and family.
