Wellman-Dean Charles Rodgers was born July 18, 1945 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the son of Vern and Helen (North) Rodgers. He graduated from WACO High School and Iowa State University with a degree in animal science. While at ISU he participated in the Rodeo Club, Block and Bridle and traveled with all the livestock and meat judging teams. Dean was united in marriage to Janis Rae Ruegsegger on June 14, 1969 at the Franklin Methodist Church near Wellman. Dean worked as a cattle buyer for Wilson Foods and bought his first farm near Alburnett and continued to raise Angus and Limousin Cattle. The closing of Wilson's brought a move to a farm near North English, Iowa, with employment at the Frytown Egg House and Lynn Yoder Construction. In 1986 they moved to the home farm area, where he worked as an Ag Science Teacher in Lone Tree and Highland Community Schools for 20 years. In the fall of 1998 they moved to an acreage near Wellman. Dean then worked for Casey General Store making pizza's and was known as the best pizza maker ever. Dean was a member of the American Limousin Association, American Angus Association, AQHA, Lake Darling Saddle Club where he enjoyed serving in the office, announcing shows and making trophies for the youth and as a member of the Pony of the Americas Club he served on several state and national committees and was a state inspector, was also honored by the club for his many achievements and support of the breed by inducting him to the Hall of Fame, which also includes four ponies raised and owned by Rising R. Dean enjoyed meeting new people, going to auctions but his greatest joy was spending time with his family. Dean died Monday, August 12, 2013 at his home near Wellman at the age of 68 years. He is survived by his wife Jan; two children: Steven Duane (Colleen) Rodgers and Dena Diane (Cameron) Davis all of Wellman; 9 grandchildren: Everett, Hazel, Henry, Wendell, Oliver and a baby Rodgers, due in January, Caleb, Cole and Sidney Davis; a sister: Vernene (Gary) Lenz of Glyndon, Maryland; four brothers: Blaine (Gayle) Rodgers of Denver, CO, Wayne (Marylou) Rodgers of Mt. Pleasant, Richard (Mwansa) Rodgers of Tiffin and Allen Rodgers of Winfield. He was preceded in death by his parents. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 am Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman. A private family burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00 to 8:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman. A general memorial has been established.
