David Eugene Slabaugh was born May 21, 1940 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Menno M. and Annie M. Coblentz Slabaugh. He attended Boone rural school near Sharon Center. David was united in marriage to Marjorie Hochstedler on August 6, 1960 at the Fairview Mennonite Church. He served two years in 1-W Service in Colorado Springs. He was a lifelong resident of the Sharon Center and Kalona communities. He worked as a mechanic and farmed and for the past 20 years owned and operated Slabaugh Trucking in Kalona. David was baptized and a lifelong member of the Fairview Mennonite Church where he was currently a Sunday School teacher and chairman of the church trustees. David died of an apparent heart attack on Thursday, August 12, 2004, while in his truck, near Independence, Iowa at the age of 64 years. He is survived by his wife Marjorie of Kalona; three children: Sheri Miller and husband Steve of Kalona - Gregory Slabaugh of New York City, New York and Merwin Slabaugh and wife Kathy of Kalona; seven grandchildren: Cody, Kendra, Caleb and Cade Miller, Austin, Erica and Nicholas Slabaugh; and a brother Daryl Slabaugh and wife Viola of Sharon Center. David was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 16, 2004 in the Fairview Mennonite Church north of Kalona with Pastors John Hershberger and Perry Miller officiating. Burial is in the Fairview Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saturday, August 14 and from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 16 at the Yoder Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. The family will be present Saturday evening and from noon to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday. A General Memorial Fund has been established in David's name.
