Darlene (Mrs. Rodney) Mehaffy, 76, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Monday, December 31, 2007, at the Pleasant Manor Care Center. According to her wishes, Mrs. Mehaffy's body has been cremated. Friends may sign the register book and leave memorials on Friday, January 4, 2008, from 12 noon until 8:00 p.m., at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel of Mt. Pleasant. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Hope Haven, American Cancer Society, or the Parkinson's Foundation. A private inurnment will be held at a later date. The daughter of Henry and Gladys Smith Alter, Darlene was born on August 5, 1931, in Trenton, IA. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. She then worked for the Iowa Telephone Company. On July 4, 1952, Darlene married Rodney Mehaffy in Reno, NV. While her husband was in the service, Darlene worked for Berkley Telephone Office in Berkley, CA. She was a mother and housewife. After returning to Iowa, Darlene worked for Midwest Biscuit Company and was co-owner, manager, and dispatcher for Mehaffy Moving and Storage. She worked for Metromail in Mt. Pleasant for 29 years, retiring in 1996. Darlene loved spending time with her family and taking care of them. She was the organizer and leader for the Henry County 4-H group designed especially for retarded children. She was a member of the Henry County Association for Retarded Citizens and served as their treasurer. Darlene enjoyed motorcycle riding and outdoor sports. Along with her husband, Rodney, Mrs. Mehaffy is survived by two daughters, Vicky Mehaffy of Burlington, IA and Tammy and her husband Doug Mulford of Mt. Pleasant, IA; one sister, Beverly and her husband Walter Mullin of Mt. Pleasant, IA; and one son-in-law, Dan McCabe of Mt. Pleasant. She is also survived by four grandsons, Matthew McCabe of New Orleans, LA and Michael McCabe, Jordan Mulford, and Logan Mulford, all of Mt. Pleasant, IA. Mrs. Mehaffy was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Pam McCabe; and a brother, Jerry Alter.
