Darlene Holden was born on September 4, 1932 in Moody, MO the daughter of Alva E. And Bertha Willard Parsons. She grew up and attended rural school in Missouri. She later moved to Kansas with her family and in 1957 came to Iowa. She moved to North English in 1960 where she worked as a nanny for the Bruce Holden family. Darlene married Bruce Weston Holden on August 15, 1962 in Kirksville, MO. She worked 6 years as a custodian at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, retiring in 1982. Darlene moved two months ago to New Sharon, IA Darlene loved to laugh and spend time with her family. She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, watching her westerns, especially John Wayne movies, and playing Pepper and Gin. She died following a short illness on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, IA. She is survived by 6 step children: Vicki (Kent) Olson of Mesa, AZ; Scott Holden of Iowa City, IA; Larry (Sandi) Holden of Las Vegas, NV; Kevin Holden ; Kathy (Todd) Bro of Roosevelt, UT; and Linda (Mike) Carter of Williamsburg, IA; 14 step grandchildren; 12 step great grandchildren; brothers: Jim Parsons of Iowa City, IA and Glenn (Arlene) Parsons of What Cheer, IA: a sister-n-law Alice Holden of North English, IA; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bruce in December 2002, and brothers Marion and Claude Parsons. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 2, 2008 with the Rev. Ron Breese officiating..Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday, August 1st from 5 PM to 7 PM. A general memorial fund has been established.
