Danny LaVaun Mahan was born on August18, 1947 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Richard and Rose Cavin Mahan. He grew up in North English and attended English Valleys High School. Danny served in the US Army in Korea. In 1972 he married Deborah Parmer in Shueyville, Iowa. They later divorced. Danny worked 21 years as a meat packer at Farmstead in Cedar Rapids. He then worked as a painter at Kinze Manufacturing near Williamsburg until his retirement in 2009. Danny loved drag racing, riding his Harley Davidson, hunting and fishing and working on cars. Since his retirement he enjoyed working with Lynn Gorsch restoring vintage cars. Danny was a member of the NHRA, Street Rod Association and the NRA. Danny died after a sudden illness on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at the age of 64 years. He is survived by daughters Merre Mahan of Kalona, Iowa; Kathleen Mahan-Vandepol of Hornick, Iowa; four grandchildren: Paul Wittke, Laynie Mahan, Marley Wagnor and David Vandepol; his mother Rose Mahan of North English; brothers and sisters: Linda Mahan-Scott of North English, Iowa; Don Mahan of Marion, Iowa; Terry Mahan of North English, Iowa and R.J. Mahan of Ladora, Iowa. Danny was preceded in death by his father and a granddaughter Grace Wagnor. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Pastor Kirk Statler will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. In lieu of flowers a general memorial fund has been established.
