HARPER-Daniel J. Merz, age 84, of Harper, died Monday, January 26, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City, following a brief illness. Dan was born December 28, 1924, near Harper, to John and Margaret (Sieren) Merz and graduated from St. Elizabeth High School in Harper. He then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. On June 17, 1959, he married Kathryn Evonne Flynn in Washington, Iowa. A lifetime resident of the Harper community, Dan farmed until retiring in 1987. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, V.F.W. and was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. Dan enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, making home brew and being with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife: Evonne of Harper; five children: Bradley of Cameron, North Carolina, Angela Abernathey and husband Jim of Swisher, Kevin of Sigourney, Jacqueline Campbell and husband Brad of Juneau, Alaska and Sheila of Ames and four grandchildren: Timothy and Tanner Cave and Ben and Nolan Campbell. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: Richard, Arthur, William "Bill", Floyd, John, Jr. and Lester and two sisters: Ellen Laux and Mary Berg. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 30, 2009, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper, with military rites by the Keota V.F.W. Post #4716. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 5:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Maplewood Manor or Q.R.S. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Dan and his family.
