Charles Leroy Pope was born on September 10, 1929, near South English, IA, the son of Russell Frederick and Hazel E. Goodman Pope. He graduated from North English High School and served a Sergeant in the US Army during the Korean War. Charles was a farmer all of his life. On September 11, 1965, he was united in marriage to Marlene Elizabeth Fisher at the Franklin Methodist Church near Wellman. Charles was a member of the North English United Methodist Church and had attended the Franklin United Methodist Church. His greatest joys were spending time with his family and granddaughter Lauren and driving his team of horses on the annual trip to Fort Madison, IA. Charles died following a courages battle with cancer at his home near North English on Saturday, January 19, 2008. He lived 78 years, 4 months and 9 days. He is survived by his wife Marlene Pope of North English, a son Lynn Pope and wife Amney of North English, a granddaughter Lauren Pope and a sister Agnes Guzzardo of Roscoe, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Mary DeVault. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with the Rev. Marlene Janssen officiating. His body was deeded to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and burial of his ashes will be at a later date in the Wellman Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers the family requests memorials for Iowa City Hospice, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center or Habitat For Humanity.
