HARPER-Cecilia E. Smith, age 97, formerly of Harper, died Wednesday, January 11, 2006, at Victoria Gardens of Frisco in Frisco, Texas. Cecilia was born Mary 13, 1908, in Columbus Junction, Iowa, to Frank and Johanna (Furlong) Daniel and graduated from Columbus Junction High School. On December 10, 1932, she married Alvin J. "Doc" Smith in Rock Island, Illinois. The couple moved to Harper in 1934 where she was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and past president of the Harper Federated Womens' Club. Following her husband's retirement from the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America in 1963, they moved to be near their daughter, Joan Martin, in Emmetsburg, Iowa. There she was a member of Holy Family Parish and the Palo Alto County Hospital Auxiliary. In 1998, she was honored at a reception in Harper to celebrate her 90th birthday, which was attended by family and former neighbors and friends. A second reception was held in Emmetsburg. In September 2003, Cecilia left Emmetsburg and began residing alternatively at her daughters' homes. She was remarkable in her late years and loved being around her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters: Joan Martin and husband Dick of Plano, Texas and Jean Gaertner and husband Fritz of Chicago, Illinois; two granddaughters: Mary Jo Reimer and husband Jeff of Flower Mound, Texas and Senta Plunkett and husband Andy of Wilmette, Illinois; two great grandchildren: Eleanor and Matthew Plunkett of Wilmette, Illinois; two stepchildren: Don Smith and wife Pauline of Hinton, Iowa and Norma June Collins of York, Nebraska and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: A.J. "Doc" on January 25, 1977; one daughter: Mary Therese Smith; three brothers: Joe, Leo and Frank Daniel and two sisters: Mary Duncan and Felicitas Terrill. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 16, 2006, at the Holy Trinity Parish-St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be at St. Elizabeth Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 15, 2005, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
